"Is it really THAT serious"?

The NBA finals will start tomorrow and I'm seeing all kinds of post on social media calling into question the "fandom" of people who don't live in the markets of the squads playing. My question is, "is it really that serious?" I never understood what caused the animosity from people when other people are perceived to have switched teams. Can we agree that with the internet the world is considerably smaller and it's so much easier to stay informed about teams all over the world?

I am a Dallas Cowboy fan, and a Pittsburgh Pirate fan, I get more grief form people in this area about the Cowboys, but oddly enough not too much about the Pirates, I supposed that will change soon as the Pirates continue to improve and compete for titles.

Sports is how I make my money, following sports is a really cool pastime, but every once in awhile I run into THAT one person who lives and dies with a team, in cases like this I like to introduce some perspective. When talking to my younger athletes (high-school, middle school) one of the first questions I ask of them is "what's your favorite team"? I get all kinds of answers then I hit them with "when I was your age my favorite team was the team I was playing for".

So if you're a fan who is offended by people rooting for teams that you don't approve of ask yourself this, is it really THAT serious?
