My Sports Rant

With this pandemic going on I will admit that I have way too much time on my hands, so yes I am going to take this time to share some of my sports pet peeves with all of you. This rant stems from listening to announcers who are paid to help us understand the action we are all looking at in real time. The thing that drives me crazy is ...

These topics come in no particular order, the first one is while watching basketball you will hear someone mention something about a basketball athlete's "length". The thing that drives me crazy is that a basketball player's "length" doesn't factor into the game, their height probably does but not their length. Plus length is measured on the horizontal plane anyway. While on the subject of basketball, you will hear an announcer say, "That player sure can score the ball." What in the world does that even mean? Has someone devised a way to score in a basketball game without the ball? Please know I have reached out to most of the talking heads on ESPN and have yet to get a response.

Moving on to football, how many times have you seen a long pass and the receiver goes up to get it and the announcer says, "He went up and 'high-pointed' the ball" which means that the ball was caught at it's highest point. What I know about human athletic performance this rarely happens. Most passes can get as high as 20 feet in the air and I don't know of many humans capable of a feat such as that. Once again reached out for comment and got nothing.

People remember words have power, and if you are lucky enough to have a job that allows you to discuss game action to the masses please know you owe us the truth and nothing less.

Until next time.
